  • I love the shows you make. Digital Flotsam is one of the best podcasts ever. I’ve had a show for some time as well, and this show really resonated with me. My wife was with Mevio for some time. I think that now that the waters have found their level, it is easier than it was when thousands a day were starting ‘one hit wonder’ shows. Left me thinking though about the podcasting bubble.

  • I’ve had this page open in a tab since the show was released. I keep hoping I come up with some clever words of encouragement or something. All I can say is that I love your shows and would miss them. That won’t buy you a cup of coffee, though.

That said, if we ever meet, I’ll gladly buy you a beer. Or two.

    Do what’s right for PDub.

  • Kevin the Announcer Guy

I got a “we’re gonna make your career” speech from AC once… I was asked to put together an imaging package for the iTunes podcasting rollout show “Podfinder” in just 24 hours… Aghast at the short amount of time I was given, I gave it a good attempt but I only managed it in 48. However the ‘concept pilot’ apparently had a deadline with Apple and AC’s daughter recorded some lines which were sent to a well known NY production house to make it sound slick… everyone loved her and the work they did. It stuck.

My stuff was some of the better imaging I have done… BUT no one besides friends and acquaintances have ever heard it. I’m not sure AC or anyone at Podshow ever actually downloaded the final product and gave it a listen. So, because I was asked to meet an unbelievable 24 hour deadline… I got skipped over. One might wonder why I, one guy at home with a mic and a computer, was ever asked… Methinks maybe my gullibility and lack of independent business acumen (read ‘shark ability’) might have been showing.

I saw the writing on the wall… even Jan Polet dumped me when his popularity and elbow rubbing with AC got him inroads with a certain famous NY announcer who replaced me on the hit test. Mind you, I’m not insulted! (And I have no hard feelings towards Jan.) The man’s work/voice is clearly better than mine… My point is, I saw early on that podcasting was going to go the way of terrestrial broadcasting… Get slick, be all about the ad money and leave everyone except well connected, industry savvy people behind.

So… I did the only sensible thing there was to do. I went immediately back to terrestrial radio… doing weather and spots while tending three automated satellite FM radio stations. It was a steady paycheck and my bank account thanked me.

But you know what, P-Dub?!! I had fun with you and Jan… my fifteen minutes of internet fame. (I would run into people elsewhere on the net and get “You’re THAT Kevin… the Announcer Guy?!!!”) I never did get any recognition for producing the $16 mil airplane piece he ran for four and a half years as his show opener. (Did you ever know I did that one?) BUT that $500 check from Podshow for my work they never used cashed just fine at the bank.

Oh well… had fun and made a few bucks… what more can you ask for?

Three cheers and a beer, P-Dub. But as someone much wiser than I once said… “Follow your bliss!”
